Diabetes Linked to Inflammation – Not Just Obesity

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Type 2 diabetes has long been associated with obesity. The more overweight the population becomes, the more cases of Type 2 diabetes there are diagnosed. Obesity is an inflammatory condition and researchers have linked inflammation to the development of diabetes. This link means that if the inflammation is treated, Type 2 diabetes could be a thing of the past, even for obese individuals.

At the root of the diabetes / inflammation link is the fact that diabetes is an autoimmune disease. It essentially fights the immune system or causes it to malfunction. Inflammation is an immune reaction that attempts to protect the cells of the body while healing occurs. When the body is constantly inflamed, insulin resistance can occur thus leading to Type 2 diabetes.

Fighting the Inflammation One Step at a Time

For patients with Type 2 diabetes who are overweight, the first line of defense is losing those extra pounds. The inflammation associated with obesity, and being overweight, is reversible. Once the weight is lost, the body stops being inflamed and the insulin resistance will subside. Weight loss, however, takes time and dedication. Reversing the inflammation, even a small amount, can lead to dramatic changes in health and well-being.

Diabetes is associated with fatigue, excessive urination, overeating, infections, changes in mood, blurred vision, blindness, kidney failure, heart disease and nerve damage. The inflammation causing the diabetes needs to be rectified quickly in order to reduce the chance of suffering from any of these side effects or symptoms related to adult onset diabetes. The most natural way to reduce internal inflammation, aside from weight loss, is the use of antioxidants.

Finding the Best Antioxidants to Reduce Inflammation

Free radicals are the reason antioxidants exist. When the body is inflamed, the cells are unable to rejuvenate and reproduce. As oxygen exchange occurs, free radicals are created and the damaged cells are unable to fight off the fast replication of these stress causing molecules. Free radicals are simply molecules that are missing an electron. In order to survive, they steal an electron from another cell and the cycle of reproduction starts. One cell steals an electron and then another cell needs an electron.

Antioxidants supply extra electrons the body can use to stop the oxidative stress associated with free radical replication. In terms of diabetes, this is important because the result is a reduction in inflammation. Oxidative stress in the body can result in an imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants. The build-up of oxidants can lead to acute and / or chronic inflammation. Thus, a strong antioxidant is needed to fight free radicals and repair the cells so the inflammation contributing to Type 2 diabetes can be resolved.

One of the most acclaimed antioxidants is found in the Nopal cactus. There are 24 betalains which are considered some of the best antioxidants known to man when used individually. The Nopal cactus is the only substance on Earth that contains all 24 betalains. Fighting off free radicals with 24 antioxidants grown to work together is one option for naturally reducing the inflammation associated with diabetes.

Diabetes Symptoms- Knowing the Types of Diabetes

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Diabetes is a condition featuring unusually high levels of glucose in the bloodstream. Insulin, produced by the pancreas, is used by the body to lower blood glucose levels. If someone’s pancreas doesn’t generate enough insulin, their body will develop diabetes.

A short list of symptoms of diabetes would include severe hunger and thirst, more urge to urinate, and fatigue. But the surest way of knowing whether you have diabetes is having a blood sugar test, also known as a Glucose Tolerance Test.

Type 1 diabetes is the more acute form. It is typically treated with special dietary restrictions, exercise and occasionally with insulin. Type 1 diabetes usually will be treated with special diet, exercise, and a weight loss plan before insulin is added. This form of diabetes is considered an insulin dependent disease.

A less severe form of diabetes, Type 2 diabetes is first treated with a diabetic diet,

exercise and weight loss. If theses measures are not successful in controlling blood sugar and insulin levels, oral medications may be added. Insulin is then finally considered if these also are unsuccessful. Type 2 diabetes normally occurs in adults who are middle age or older, which is why it is sometimes called Late-Onset Diabetes In this case, he pancreas still produces the right levels of insulin but the body has become resistant to it.

It is feasible to delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes if it runs in the family. Through losing weight, getting the right amount of exercise and controlling your diet, you can manage. If Type 2 diabetes is not treated, eventually the same complications may ensue as those seen with Type 1 diabetes.

Gestational diabetes is seen in pregnant women. Normally it disappears after the birth of the baby, however, treatment for the mother to stabilize the blood glucose levels will decrease the chance of complications to the baby as well as mother.

Juvenile Onset diabetes is another major form of diabetes that affects many children. It is believed to be the onset of Type 1 diabetes. If a child is showing even a few of the symptoms of diabetes, it’s vital that they be checked by a doctor. It is estimated that over two million adolescents are in the pre-diabetes stage. This is mostly due to being overweight. In this condition, blood glucose levels are high but not high enough to be considered diabetes. Teens usually develop this between the ages of 12 and 19.

How To Control Type 2 Diabetes

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

Diabetes is one of the most dreaded diseases afflicting mankind. People whether young or aged, men or women all are at risk. The thing is that when people are afflicted with such a disease they loose hope which further dampens the recovery process. In this article we are going to discuss some remedies which are effective in keeping diabetes under control.

Herbal Remedies
There are a lot of herbal remedies which are recommended for people suffering from diabetes. One of the most effective and widely used remedy is karela or bitter gourd which is an excellent vegetable to keep diabetes under check. It is effective because it help in lowering the blood sugar levels in the body. The practice of using herbs in place of allopathic drugs is that herbs are free from any side effects and drug overdose also has the danger of causing kidney failure.

So are Herbal Remedies the Best Option?
The mistake people often do is when they are told about a certain herbal medicine for treating diabetes they stop taking their doctors prescribed medicines which is quite wrong because herbs take their own course of time to work. One should gradually reduce the intake of allopathic drugs when the effects of herbal medication become evident. But always consult your physician before stopping your drug medication routine.

Lifestyle Changes
When you have diabetes you cannot live like a couch potato anymore. You have to keep your fitness levels at peak. Start exercising regularly and eat fresh fruits and vegetables but all fruits and vegetables are not meant for you like bananas have a very rich sugar content so always check that you do not eat such fruits and vegetables.

Diabetes Is Controllable
Although there is no permanent cure for diabetes but a strong will and a desire to live coupled with right advice at right time can easily make you keep diabetes under control. Be healthy be happy.
